Saber Marionette "J"
Vendor: Bandai / Anime Village
Problem 1:"On the second disc, episode 8, chapter 3, about 7:40 (title time), when the marionette "collectors" are introducing themselves, do you notice a channel swap? The middle guy appears and the audio comes from the centre, then the right-hand guy shows up with audio from the left, then the left-hand guy accompanied by a bloop from the right."
Workaround:
Discs Affected: DVD 2 of set 1
Players Affected:

Players Affected: Some Phillips, some Pioneer, some others.
Severity: 3-5

Problem #1 was reported to me by Jon Niehof, I confirmed it on my system. Problem #2 was reported by Jon Niehof and many others on the AoD Glitch Disc forum. Lately there have been a lot of problem DVDs by Bandai, so far all of them are dual layer ones and the trouble is fairly consistent to particular volumes of two disc sets.

Sailor Moon Season 1
Vendor: ADV
DVD Authoring: M.O.F.C.
Problem 1:The audio is extremely muffled. Episode one sounds decent but the rest are considerably worse.

I made audio clips of the Japanese Laserdiscs and ADV's season 1 disc, 1. The LDs are imperfect but definitely sound a lot better. I rented the first DVD to compare. I don't have LDs #1 or #2, so a direct comparison of the same episodes isn't possible, but I tried to capture the audio on some of the stock clips.

The first is the stock whatever is to the effect of "In the name of the moon, I'll punish you":
ADV DVD clip
Japanese LD clip

The second pair is a recording of Moon's transformation:

Japanese LD clip

You might need to right click and "save target".

Thanks to Suite_Chic and others for reporting this issue. Please email ADV about this if this bothers you. There is a chance they can't or won't do anything about it, but companies need to know that its customers demand a quality product.

Saint Seiya
Vendor: ADV Films
DVD Authoring:
Problem 1:Shokara writes: "On the English dub for episode 40, "Away We Go!", in vol.8 of "Saint Seiya", there is no sound effects track!! The dialog and music tracks are in place, but no sound effects are present!" RobochangerEXA wrote: "in the english dub there was a small bit in ep 39 that was wierd. A flux in the soundtrack.

Discs Affected: Saint Seiya, volume eight, episode 40, English track

Sakura Wars
Vendor: ADV Films, Inc.
Problem 1: The English audio in episodes 3 and 4 has a phase inversion, making it sound strange if not screwed up for some people.
Workaround: Turn off surround sound processing, switch to the subtitles, watch it in raw stereo, watched in subbed Japanese mode or disable one of the channels.
Discs Affected: all?
Players Affected: any audio setup that uses Dolby Prologic or similar system to extract surround sound out of two channel audio, and any system that makes mono sound by mixing the left and right channels. I should note that it is strange as the problem seems intermittent and doesn't affect all players equally.
Severity: 2 to 3
Problem 2:The time counter is not used, my player simply says "play" instead of displaying a time index.
Workaround: none?
Discs Affected: all?
Players Affected: all?
Severity: 1, not a major issue and so far that I can tell ADV hasn't done it since.
Problem 3:The alternate angles used to display the Japanese and English credits screws up some players.
Workaround: none?
Discs Affected: all?
Players Affected: I think the alternate angles on this disc crashes the Macintosh DVD player, depending on report, it seems it crashes the entire computer.
Severity: 2 to 3
Recalled: I don't remember if this issue has been fixed, ADV is aware of these problems.

Scryed
Vendor: Bandai

Problem 1:This DVD has various problems with several DVD players, if it has a problem with a player, it is likely to not play or be difficult to get it to play.
Workaround: Try forcing the player to skip to title 14 to play the video.
Discs Affected: volume 4
Players Affected: Akai DVP-760, Pioneer DV-333, DV-343, DV-414, DV-434; some Sony PS2s, Pioneer DVD-115 dvd-rom drive and several other computer drives experience problems. APEX AD-1500 has problems with the looping video comic.

Slayers DVD Set / Season 1
Vendor: CPM / Software Sculpters
Problems: The Japanese audio track has a phase inversion.
Workaround: Swap speaker wires on one channel. Do not use mono "mixing" or ProLogic decoding.
Discs Affected: ALL!
Players Affected: this is not a player issue, it is purely a mastering defect.
Recalled: CPM is considering a recall. I haven't seen positive signs or a confirmation that anything will be done about this problem, so please keep writing!

I have made a crude but effective box that fixes the problem in stereo mode. Click the link to read about the Slayers Fix Switch Box. I know of two separate efforts to make a line-level fixer, so stay tuned.

CPM Slayers Response and offer. Note - they said that Slayers Next does not have this problem.

Edited 4/17/2000: removed links to 123Petitions as they quit the business, and I added the link to CPM.

Southern Cross
Vendor: ADV Films
DVD Authoring: ?
Problem 1:The video is jerky in episode 19, approximately time indices 17:40 to 23:00 and the next episode preview. The last thirty seconds of episode 16 (about 23:30 to 24:00) is messed up too.
Workaround: exchange
Discs Affected: volume 4
Players Affected: not a player issue
Severity: annoying
Recalled: yes, see below
Last Updated: 2003 Nov 16

ADV claims the problem is limited to a batch of discs, although no one has reported a "good disc" in the appropriate thread. There is an exchange program nonetheless. Contact ADV and explain that you have a defective disc. They will send you a word doc replacement form. Fill out the form and send the *ENTIRE* package back to ADV (yes, box and all) at your expense. They will ship a replacement at their expense.

Thanks to "coelacanth", "Keith", "MrDisco" and several others for their reports.

Spring & Chaos (a.k.a. Kenji's Spring)
Vendor: Tokyo Pop
Authoring: ComChoice
Problem 1:The video authoring on this disc is sub par. It needs serious work but I personally feel that the video is still watchable.
Workaround: none
Discs Affected: ALL
Players Affected: not a player issue
Severity: 3
Problem 2:This show is dubtitled, meaning the dub script was used to make a sub script, and the timing is off on the first part and drifts even farther off as the show goes on.
Workaround: none? Either watch the dub or turn off the subtitles and read along with a downloaded fansub script?
Discs Affected: ALL
Players Affected: not a player issue
Severity: 3-5
Recalled: Yes, click here for details.
Last Updated: 6/17/2001

Due to a mass email campaign, TokyoPop has issued a recall and will fix the video and sub issues. They have also promised to have more correct subtitling and it should all be fixed for the replacement and all new DVDs from them. Click on the link in the Recalled line for more information.

Sugar, a Little Snow Fairy, volume 2

Workaround: none
Discs Affected: volume 2
Players Affected: not a player issue
Severity: medium - but I haven't listened to samples yet.
Problem 2:The video is noticably softer, reportedly identical to that of Ai Yori Aoshi, volume 2.

Pioneer rep Chad Kime wrote this on August 8, 2003:
We finally have the details for the exchange program for A LITTLE SNOW FAIRY SUGAR: FRIENDS AND DREAMS (V.2). For people who want to turn in their DVDs with the mono encoded Japanese tracks for the properly encoded stereo versions, here are the instructions:

1) Download the form for the exchange from:

Sugar vol 2 exchange form

2) Fill out the form and send the form and DVD (ONLY, not the packaging, inserts, etc.) to:
Sugar Replacement Program
The Right Stuf International
PO Box 71309
Des Moines, IA 50325

Please fill out the form and send in your DVD for replacement as soon as possible. All materials must be postmarked no later than 10/31/03.

The revised master has been completed and the check discs are being made for the revised DVD for Sugar V2 and we expect the quality control check to be completed in early August. Then the manufacturing will begin and The Right Stuf should receive the DVDs to ship out before the end of August. An exact date will only be determined once the DVD check discs pass quality control.

If you have any questions, I will continue to browse these forums or you can call the Right Stuf directly at 800-338-6827. Thank you for your patience and your support!

I would like to thank Pioneer for fixing a flawed product, and I hope problems like this prompt improvements in the quality testing. There was no mention of the video problem, so if the softer video bothers you, please email them concerning that so it gets fixed.

Many have started getting their discs back. If you have sent in and not recieved it, contact TRSI soon.
