Workaround: ?
Discs Affected: all?
Players Affected: not a player issue
Severity: annoying
Recalled: ADV is quietly replacing discs, go here and ask for a replacement

Ran: Are you looking for Green Legend Ran?

Ranma 1/2 OAV Box Set
Vendor: Viz Video
Problem 1:The left and right audio channels are swapped in many instances. There is a strange video glitch on the first disc at about time index 107:40, it adds rainbows and makes nearly every non horizontal line jagged. Watch the character's hair or the basketball net.
Workaround:switch connectors on your stereo audio cables. Remember to switch them back when you are done! Truth told, the reversal isn't consistent.
Discs Affected: all so far
Players Affected: any stereo or better audio system
Recalled:This was fixed but I think the deadline has long passed.

Jim Lazar has written an extensive review at the Anime on DVD site on the topic of the audio track swaps. One thing that is known for sure is that the OVA tapes were out for nearly five years and somehow no one noticed that their audio tracks were swapped until the DVD set arrived.

[Update 4/18/2001]: The set has been fixed, if you want to swap them, contact right stuf (who does Pioneer's cust service) at 1-800-338-6827. There may be a way to identify a "fixed" version, the original set had a clear slipcase that slipped up or down, the new set is said to have a slipcase where packaging slides out the side instead.

[Update 7/4/2001]: There are reports of people having to deal with lots of hassles getting a fixed replacement set shipped to them undamaged. Make sure you write to Pioneer asking them to change over to normal keep cases for their box sets.

Ranma 1/2 TV
Vendor: Viz Video
Problem 1:There was an issue with Season 3, disc 5, episodes 22 and 23 do not have Japanese audio. I apologize for not entering it long ago.
Workaround: none
Discs Affected: only disc 5 in Season 3 box
Players Affected: not a player issue
Problem 2:Some subtitles show up early in an episode in Season 5, disc 2
Workaround: none
Discs Affected: only disc 2 in the season 5 set
Players Affected: not a player issue
Recalled:yes. The fix with the issue with Season 3 has expired. Season 5 replacement. The Season 5 replacement offer expires December 31, 2003.

Thanks to "Khimenko Victor" for reminding me of these problems.

Real Bout High School volume 1
Vendor: TOKYOPOP
DVD Authoring: ?
Problem 1:The "menu" button is locked out on the previews.
Workaround: pressing fast forward (>>) and chapter skip forward (>>|) buttons are still allowed.
Discs Affected: all?
Players Affected: The menu button for my Panasonic RP-56 is locked, my Pioneer DVL-700 completely aborts playback when "menu" is pressed.
Severity: 2
Recalled: no

Record of Lodoss War TV Set
Vendor: CPM
Problem 1:Many scene switches have a "frame jump" and show a white line of fuzz at the bottom or top of the frame
Workaround: none, this is very likely not CPM's fault, it is an after effect of the film splicing
Discs Affected: all
Players Affected: all, you'll notice this most on a computer player or on a TV with thin overscan margins.
Severity: 1-2, some didn't even notice the problem
Recalled:no. A recall would likely fix nothing.

Thanks to ElBandit for posting about it, and Cyrus for seconding the motion. This problem sounds like a film editing problem, I don't think CPM can get film to correct the problem.

Revolutionary Girl Utena
Vendor: Central Park Media / Software Sculptors
Problem 1: Volume 2 will not play at all on JVC players.
Workaround: Try cleaning the disc, otherwise, the only recourse is to return the disc or use another player
Discs Affected: volume 2
Players Affected: 501, 701 model numbers, possibly others, possibly all JVC players?
Severity: 5 for those that own an affected player
Problem 2: The masters used had a lot of film splice "shakes". This is not the fault of CPM but rather the original process of putting the film together. The problem varies by episode. This problem is also apparent on the Region 2 discs. This is not a DVD authoring problem.
Workaround: ?
Discs Affected: all
Players Affected: not a player problem
Severity: it depending on the sensitivity of person watching.
Updated: Jan 26, 2002
Recalled: no.

On problem 1: "Volume 1 is fine. Go figure." - PatrickD submitted this report. Problem 2: numerous complaints have filed in over the last year, I decided to put it up.

Royal Space Force: Please look here for Wings of Honneamise.

Rurouni Kenshin TV DVD volume 1
Vendor: AnimeWorks / Media Blasters
Problem 1:The Japanese audio has a phase inversion, making the voices either sound very quiet or come out of the surround channel. Even in raw stereo, the Japanese audio is apparently swapped left to right
Workaround: Turn off surround sound processing, watch it in raw stereo, or disable one of the channels. Headphones might help.
Discs Affected: all of the original production version
Players Affected: all?
Severity: 3
Problem 2:The time counter is not used, my player simply says "play" instead of displaying a time index.
Workaround:
Discs Affected: all of the original production version
Players Affected: all?
Severity: 1
Recalled: Yes. You need to contact Media Blasters for a swapout or exchange it with your retailer. There is as of yet no good way to determine if any particular copy is 'fixed'. Of note is that the first episode is still audio phase inverted.
Last Updated: 3/17/2001

Volume 2 was not effected by problem #1. Media Blasters has acknowledged the missing time counters on their discs. It should be fixed on future discs they release. If the fix is a real fix then I'll be happy to give them the reverse blade sword award. update [11/09/2000]: As of RK DVD 3, the time counter is used. They are also using dual layer discs now as well.

Rurouni Kenshin (a.k.a. Samurai X): Trust
Vendor: AD Vision Films
Problem 1:At 16:20 for five seconds the English audio is distorted while Saitou speaks. It’s a hallow echo effect. At 26:05 there is a snap in the audio. Japanese audio is fine in both spots.
Workaround: Watch it subtitled.
Discs Affected: all?
Players Affected: all?
Severity: 1
Recalled: no

This audio glitch was reported by Jim Lazar. I haven't personally confirmed it yet.

Rurouni Kenshin (a.k.a. Samurai X): The Movie
Vendor: AD Vision Films
Nitpick 1:The "reversable" cover was missing the printing on the back side.
Workaround: Send an S.A.S.E to the printer for a replacement
Discs Affected: The first production run, not a DVD issue, the DVD is fine, the keepcase insert is wrong.
Severity: 2
Recalled: yes. Please click here to get a replacement cover.

[Update 7/4/2001] There is no word yet whether the printer is actually following through with the offer. If there is, please let me know.
[Update 4/7/2002] I have a report from "Z" that the specified packaging was sent per instructions via certified mail, but have never recieved it. I haven't really heard of anyone ever getting this.
