Problem 1: The menu freezes in some situations on some Pioneer players. If the previews are allowed to play without interruption, the menu locks up. It also locks up when it automatically returns to the menu after playing the fourth episode. Workaround: Push the menu button to skip the previews. if locked up, try pushing the direction buttons (that works on Pioneer DV-414) Discs Affected: all? Players Affected: Pioneer DVL-919, DV-414, DV-515, DV-606A, DV-717, DVL-V888 are noted. The DVL-700, DV-434, DV-626 apparently are NOT affected. Severity: 1-2

Problem 2: The subs force themselves on in one instance "Vol. 1 in the first episode at about 17:30 where a subtitle ("Yes, Sir") appears even if you have subtitles turned off. It looks just like a DVD generated sub (same font), but it behaves like a hard sub. If you're watching it subtitled, you won't notice it." Workaround: Push the menu button to skip the previews. Discs Affected: all? Players Affected: Pioneer DVL-919, DV-414, DV-606A, DV-717, DVL-V888 are noted. The DVL-700, DV-434, DV-626 apparently are NOT affected. Severity: 1-2

Problem 1: The menu is very slow on some players. On a Toshiba 1200 it takes about two minutes to go to the language menu, change the language and subs and go back to play the vide. Workaround: try using the sub and audio buttons on the player remote, but not all players have such a feature Discs Affected: all? Players Affected: Only the Toshiba 1200 had complaints so far. Severity: 1

Problem 2: Some players drop frames and audio on a few scenes in the last episode, it appears particularly in the high static scenes, at time indices 65:40, 67:50 to 68:20 and 68:50. Workaround: none Discs Affected: all? Players Affected: the Toshiba SD-2008 had problems in all three places, a Pioneer DVL-700 had problems only in the middle instance. Severity: 2-3

In the words of Niel at Siren Home Ent: "We are aware of the problem, but what it all comes down to is logistics. By not recalling the product, we may upset 2% of the market by leaving it as it stands". There are still no plans for a remaster or recall. I have never before heard of a company that is willing to immediately rule out a fix when it is in their power to fix it. If only 2% of their customers will notice, then that means that it won't have to replace very many copies. My advice is to buy Manga's R1 release instead if you want the best subs, and interestingly enough, the distributors seem to be making that option available. They have issued an official press release .

9/4/2000 I reduced my editorialization on this situation, as I wanted to stick to the facts and not push my opinion onto others. It's not hard to guess my stand though. They did say they will refund the money of those that ask for it.

9/15/2000 As I hoped, a rep from Madman Ent. responded here. I'm glad I backtracked on the last update. I realized the difficulties that these people were up against. Apparently the lag time is 1/2 a second rather than 2 seconds that I thought I had originally seen posted. I would like a confirmation, but I don't know how often any of our Aussie friends read my page. I have at least temporarily downgraded my severity rating.

Problem 2: The sound track has its track points placed wrong. "what should be tracks 8 and 9 have "run together" somehow and become an 8:31 long track 8, with everything afterward being one track number lower than they should be. I've tried several different CD player programs, and they all show the same thing." Track 08 - velveteen contains track 09 - Lithium Flower as well 09 is Home stay 10 is Inner Univers 11 is first 2:14 of Fish - Silent Cruise 12 is rest of Fish - Silent Cruise Workaround: ? Problem 3: The DTS DVD is labeled as Dolby Digital, Dolby Digital disc is labeled as DTS. The standard edition includes the DTS version, which is useless for some people. Workaround: trade it in when a program is announced. Discs Affected: Volume 2, both standard and special edition. It is a lot of them, but it is supposedly a batch mix-up, so some of them might be right. Players Affected: not a player issue Severity: high
