Media Blasters and the Mono Soundtrack

Lately some suspicious problems have been cropping up in Media Blasters DVDs having mono audio when many of them should have had stereo. The discovery of the mono tracks on the highly anticipated release of Twelve Kingdoms was something of a watershed event. Many people that had not given stereo audio a moment's thought have started going back to their other recent purchases of Media Blasters products and are making some odd discoveries. Berserk is particularly unusual where the Japanese track in earlier volumes were in stereo but later become mono, and the English track alternates between stereo and mono on a per-volume basis.

I am listing titles that have been deemed by others to be suspicious. Please keep in mind that for some titles, it is entirely possible that Media Blasters got Japanese mono masters but still got stereo voiceless elements, or mono voiceless elements despite the original audio being stereo. This may not be known for certain but many fans believe it is time to demand a minimum of a stereo sound track if stereo is available in Japan.

Please keep in mind that some of these title reports haven't been thoughroughly validated, often reported by only one person. Because people can make mistakes, I would like to see multiple people verify each particular title, and I would also like to see reports of whether the Japanese laserdisc / DVD / TV broadcast was truly stereo or not. Any constructive clarification, confirmation and additional information is appreciated.

A lot of people have used a lot of different methods, some of them pretty meticulously documented, to confirm that Twelve Kingdoms is in mono. The only significant dissenting opinion comes from Media Blasters themselves. So far their hedged responses have mostly been in blaming user's equipment for having faulty ProLogic decoders. This argument does not work as so many people have concluded this both with and without ProLogic decoding available to them. Granted, a few of the titles on this list may have been originally made in mono, but several of them were surely available in stereo.

Anime On DVD member xelloss was kind enough to compile most of the following list, names given are those of other AoD members that contributed reports. I have added some entries and sorted for alphabetical order. At least one person speculated that something started happening about near the mid-way point of the Berserk release, where a lot of MB titles released from the time of volume 3 and on were affected in some way. Does Media Blasters credit their DVD authoring crew and equipment? Maybe someone can track if this can be tracked to a person, group or piece of their equipment doing this so the problem can be corrected so future volumes do not have this problem.
